Kyle Sweeney pitched his first complete-game shutout of the season and Sacred Heart Prep won its 12th straight game – a 5-0 victory at San Mateo – to take a commanding two-game lead in the PAL-Ocean Division with two weeks to go in the regular season.
In two games this week, the Gators blanked the Bearcats over 18 innings. The 12-game winning streak is the third longest in school history and finally got mentioned on Thursday.
"It got talked about," said Gators coach Sean McMillan. "We're just trying to win every game and peak in May. That was our goal from day one."
The Gators will attempt to extend their streak on Tuesday when they begin a series with visiting Terra Nova.
"Every day, every game is a new opportunity," McMillan said. "None is bigger than the other."
You get the feeling both the Gators and Bearcats, whose pitching was pretty good this week for all but the final inning on Thursday, will hear their names called on May 16 at the Central Coast Section selection meeting.
Sweeney allowed seven hits and struck out five. He threw just 90 pitches, which is only four mor than his season high, McMillan said.
"His pitch count was nothing crazy," he said. "He got some quick outs and that allowed him to stay in."
Combine Sweeney's performance with Rallin Covey's 8 2/3 innings of two-hit ball on Tuesday paints the picture of a team that has rolled through the Ocean Division season.
Sacred Heart Prep scored a run in the first, added an insurance run in the fourth and broke it open with three in the seventh.
Leadoff man Nico Pollioni had a hit, scored two runs and drove in another, while third baseman JP Durrett drove in two runs and sophomore Brayden Berta had two hits.
Hudson Brandt had two hits for the Bearcats, while Miguel Olivas allowed just two runs through six innings before running out of gas in the seventh. He finished the game with nine strikeouts.
