Archer Horn and his St. Ignatius Prep teammates had to wait a few extra days to break the seal on a new season, but they didn't waste any time showing off their talent.

Horn, the senior shortstop, who has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Stanford in the fall but might draw some interest of the big-league scouts in the months leading up the Major League Baseball Draft, shined brightly in St. Ignatius Prep's 3-2 victory over visiting Cardinal Newman.

He homered in the fifth inning to give the Wildcats 3-2 lead and then came on in relief to record the final five outs of the game as St. Ignatius Prep finally got its season underway.

The Wildcats' opener with De La Salle was cancelled after the De La Salle administration ruled its baseball team had to postpone its first five games after the team violated behavioral policies.

Chase Gordon made the start and was nicked for two runs in more than three innings of work. The Wildcats came back to tie the game in the third. A Gordon single knotted the game at two.

In the fifth, Horn blasted one over the fence the right-field fence at Fairmont Park to give the Wildcats the lead for good and make a winner out of Charlie Stecher. Horn threw 23 pitches and retired all five batters he faced, striking out two.
