PALO ALTO – Five pitches into the game, St. Ignatius Prep had a lead it would never relinquish. The quick run came courtesy of an Archer Horn home run that sailed over the fence in right-center field.
And for the next two hours, the Wildcats spent their time adding to the lead. The 9-1 victory over host Palo Alto showcased everything St. Ignatius does well. It swung the bats. It made every play on the infield, and the pitchers filled the strike zone.
But it all begins with Horn.
"He's our tone setter," said centerfielder DJ Delaney, who hits behind Horn in the batting order. "He's the guy. We follow him and he's gonna take us there. But I think we got an all-around performance from everyone. When you see (a leadoff home run), you get a good feeling about the game."
After flying out in the first, Delaney knocked in a run in his next three plate appearances. A third-inning triple off the wall in right field drove in one run. A single in the fifth knocked in another and a sixth-inning sacrifice fly put a period on his three-RBI game.
Ryan Rosenthal added a pair of run-scoring singles and Luke Van de Braak had a two-run single for the Wildcats, who collected a season-high 13 hits against the Vikings.
Meanwhile, the pitching trio of Connor Law, who was making his first varsity start, Leo Rhein and A.J. Wineinger scattered six hits, while walking just one and hitting another batter, in showing the effectiveness of pitching to contact.
The Wildcats will host Carlmont on Friday before launching into the WCAL season next week with a series against Mitty.
"This is a good week for us to get into that Tuesday-Friday rhythm," said St. Ignatius coach Brian Pollzzie. "I feel like every game, we're getting a little better. Today was good to get out on the road and get a win."
Palo Alto will begin the SCVAL-De Anza Division season Wednesday when it travels to winless Homestead. The Mustangs will be at Palo Alto on Friday.
"I think we're going to be fine," said Palo Alto coach Pete Fukuhara, who said the time change and sun staying out later is going to help his team. "That's my prediction."
Sophomore Michael Wu had two hits for the Vikings.
