By last May, the Mills Vikings had figured it out. The team that struggled for the first two months of the season began winning and was making a push toward a Central Coast Section playoff berth.
The Vikings won seven of their final 10 games, but that slow start – and soft nonleague schedule – created a hole they could never climb out of and they found themselves shut out from the postseason party.
A new coach, Dario Bortolotto, who pitched at Serra High a decade ago before playing collegiately, takes over the reins of a program that still has a couple of good players from last year's squad, but was hit hard by the graduation of a few solid performers.
Speedy centerfielder Nick Lafon might be the best defensive outfielder on the Peninsula. The senior can run the bases and swing the bat, too. After hitting .439 as a sophomore, he came back to Earth last year by hitting .348 with 24 hits. He wasn't happy with his season – then again, he wasn't content with his eye-popping stats as a sophomore – and looks to finish his high school career with a big season.
Infielder Tino Janke hit .268 last year and is the Vikings' top returning pitcher. He was 3-4 with a 3.77 earned-run average in 39 innings of work last year. Sophomore Hagen Chan and senior Kendrick Choi might be considered for the No. 2 spot in the rotation.
Choi, who also plays catcher, hit .278 with 15 hits and nine RBI last season.
