With six returning starters from a team that qualified for the CCS tournament, Jeff Schwan has a team he thinks can compete for the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League – De Anza Division crown.

"I have a gritty group of juniors who are looking to make their mark on the Mountain View baseball program," Schwan said. "We have 16 juniors on the roster."

Last year, 11 sophomores played at the varsity level at some point. That kind of experience will pay dividends this year, Schwan says.

"We always have an opportunity to win no matter who we play," says junior outfielder Zander Yocum.

Senior pitcher Brennan Dooley was an all-league second-team performer after throwing 80 innings, including in the CCS tournament, and putting together an 8-5 record and 1.75 earned-run average.

Catcher Ethan Frenher, another senior, missed much of last season with an injury, but hit .229. He will a pitching staff that, with the exception of Dooley, will be young.

Yocum was an all-league performer last year, hitting .325 with two homers and six doubles. Yocum's bat figures to be in the middle of the Spartans' lineup.

Other juniors returning to the starting lineup are shortstop and pitcher Preston, Huang (3-1, 2.14 ERA), third baseman Jackson Blake (eight RBI, six doubles), and junior pitcher and outfielder Andrew Huang (1-1, 3.4 ERA).

First baseman Mikito Tsuruoko (.273, five RBI) also figures to find his way to the lineup.
