A week away from school, the rigors of the WCAL season and the Peninsula proved to be enough on Monday for the Serra Padres, who ended their three-game losing streak with a 6-1 victory over Whitney in the opening round of the Boras Family Classic in Sacramento.
The Padres came back and beat Franklin, 2-1, later in the evening to advance deeper into the winner's bracket.
In the win over Whitney, Serra left no doubt by scoring four runs in the first inning and riding the right arm of sophomore Rocco Zirelli.
Nate Hui led off the first with a walk. An Aaron Minton single and William Walbridge walk loaded the bases. Chase Peavey's fielder's choice grounder plated one run, while a Jack Wessell base hit drove home another.
A booted Aaron Maier grounded brought home two more runs to give the Padres a 4-0 lead.
Zirelli scattered five hits and a run in the first complete game of his varsity career. He struck out four.
