One week into the new season, Sequoia has made a statement it plans to make some noise in the PAL-Bay Division.
The Ravens served notice on Saturday by jumping to a lead and withstanding a wild Wilcox rally in the seventh to post a 7-6 victory and win the Ted Tamone tournament at MacDonald High in Santa Clara.
Wilcox rallied from a 7-2 deficit to cut the lead to one run in the seventh with the tying run at third base before Garrett Johnson came on the close out the Chargers by striking out senior third baseman Dylan Jackson.
Amazingly, the Ravens are 3-0 and haven't had to use pitcher Morgan Winfield yet. Winfield, who had knee surgery in the summer, has been cleared for full activity, but coach Mike Doyle is taking is slow with the senior Saint Mary's College signee.
"I'm pretty happy to win a tourney without Morgan throwing on the bump," Doyle said, noting that Winfield has been shining defensively at third base in the early going.
Mays Pagnotta went 3 2/3 innings to pick up the win. The senior left the game in the fourth with a lead after surrendering just two runs.
Johnson and Cole Hymer had two hits each for the Ravens, while sophomore Ollie Connolly had two hits. Mario Fausto and Johnson drove in two runs each.
"We continued to swing it pretty good tonight," Doyle said.
Gilbert Padilla had two hits and drove in three runs for the Chargers. Samuel Martinez also had two hits.
