St. Mary's 1, Saint Francis 0
Sometimes, you just have to tip your hat to the opponent. Dax Hardcastle, a 2025 MaxPreps all-American who will be playing baseball at Mississippi State in the fall, was dominant on Wednesday.
The St. Mary's of Stockton senior allowed just two hits – doubles by Gino Cappellazzo and Jack Leeper – while striking out 15 in the Rams' 1-0 victory over the Lancers at the rain-plagued Boras Family Classic in Sacramento.
"He was really good," said Saint Francis coach Erik Wagle. "He threw strikes and really commanded his change-up in any count, so our hitters weren't able to sit on any pitch."
The loss snapped Saint Francis' winning streak at 10, the longest on the Peninsula this season. In addition, St. Mary's fifth inning run off Ethan Tang snapped the Lancers streak of innings without giving up an earned run at 64 1/3 innings.
Leeper had two more stolen bases for Saint Francis and now has 23 this season.
The Lancers' second game of the day – an afternoon affair with Oak Ridge – was rained out. Los Gatos got two innings in against Whitney, while St. Ignatius Prep was also rained out.
