Sequoia senior Morgan Winfield, who will undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus on Thursday after getting injured sliding into second base earlier this summer, orally committed to Saint Mary's College on Sunday.
The first baseman and pitcher, one of the best power hitters on the Peninsula, made his decision early Sunday afternoon.
"I haven't signed any paper yet, but that's where I'm going," said Winfield, who won't sign his letter of intent until the spring.
Saint Mary's College earned a spot on the NCAA tournament in June and shocked the college baseball world by knocking off Oregon State in its opener before being eliminated.
"That definitely caught my eye," said Winfield, who last month earned the No. 12 spot on PeninsulaPrepBaseball.com's postseason Prime 31. "But I also loved the location and the campus was beautiful. ... The coaches were great, and I love the small-school setting."
Winfield aspires to pitch and play in the field at the collegiate level and said coach Eric Valenzuela was receptive to the idea.
"I want to be a two-way option in college," he said. "I thought my pitching was pretty good. I've worked hard since last year on my craft and I think it paid off. I still have work to do with my velocity."
Winfield had been working on his velocity this summer, but his training hit a snag earlier this month when he tore a meniscus while sliding into second base during a summer-league game.
He says he'll be at full strength by the time the Ravens begin practices in February.
Winfield hit .380 with six home runs and 29 RBI in helping Sequoia to the CCS-Division III tournament. He had a .709 slugging percentage and 1.219 OPS.
On the mound, he was 6-0 with a 1.67 earned-run average and 68 strikeouts.
