Facebook was running wild this week with a story about the new baseball facility at Terra Nova High being named in honor of a local sportswriting legend.
"It's not true," said Horace Hinshaw, the former longtime sports editor of the Pacifica Tribune. "A lot of people have been pushing for it to happen, but it's not going to happen anytime soon."
Hinshaw, who has been writing sports in Pacifica for the better part of the last 50 years, is a Pacifica institution. There was a time when Hinshaw was the most recognizable person in the coastal town of 39,000. More recognizable than the mayor.
The effort to get the field named in Hinshaw's honor is reportedly being led by former Terra Nova three-sport standout Mike Mooney, a 1977 graduate. On Sunday, the social media abuzz with photos of a new scoreboard that featured the Hinshaw's name.
"It's not real. That's AI," said Hinshaw, now in his mid-80s. "Before something like this could happen, it's got to go through the city and the school board. That will take a while. If it happens, it happens."
Terra Nova High, which played on the road all of last season, practice on its new field last week for the first time in 21 months. The renovation included adding artificial turf, lights and restrooms to the diamond, which was originally built in the 1960s when the Pacifica campus opened its doors.
"It was really cool," said Terra Nova coach Jared Milch. "I was so happy for the kids."
The project, part of an $11.5 million bond issue that was passed in 2020, kept the Tigers on the road all of 2025.
The Tigers will play their first home game since May 7, 2024, on Feb. 25 when they host San Lorenzo Valley.
