Peninsula Prep Baseball

We're said all along, rankings mean nothing. They're just a way to generate discussion and for us to populate PeninsulaPrepBaseball.com each week with something fresh.
So, let's do it one more time. Just once more.
Starting on Saturday, the final scores – and a single-elimination tournament – will take the place of all of this.
We're excited to see what the selection committee comes up with on Monday afternoon. Who will the lucky 48 teams be and how will they be seeded and divided? Log on Monday night and for the brackets.
Until then, here's one more iteration of our rankings.
Rank | Team | Summary |
---|---|---|
1. | Valley Christian (23-6-1) | The WCAL tourney is a weird beast. That said, we can't punish the Warriors too much for a loss to a suddenly hot Bellarmine squad -- especially when every other WCAL team within striking distance of the top spot suffered a loss, too. If Brock Ketelsen throwing more than 100 pitches this week is a sign of things to come, the Warriors won't be an easy out in the CCS tournament. |
2. | Serra (23-6) | Mat Keplinger's plan of a one-two punch of Kelley Crawford and Davis Minton on the mound finally gave to fruition this weeks. They combined to give up just one run. Add to the mix junior Riley Lim, who has been Serra's top pitcher all year, and the Padres have a pretty solid rotation. That's on top of their hitting and defense. |
3. | St. Ignatius Prep (17-9-2) | Archer Horn hit two long drives that would have been home runs in other ballparks. Instead, they turned into outs -- including the game-ender where Brock Ketelsen went over the fence to make a game-saving grab -- in a loss to Valley Christian. No need to panic. The Wildcats are going to be just fine. Horn, Emmett Johnson and DJ Delaney are a strong trio. |
4. | Menlo-Atherton (20-7) | Twenty wins is an accomplishment. So is a PAL Bay Division crown. The Bears have won 16 of their last 19 games and did so with a team that has a quality player at every position. Jack Molise has two grand slams and is a solid Wednesday starter who should be on the short list for Bay Division player of the year. |
5. | Saint Francis (19-9) | It's hard to tell if the Lancers are just leaking oil or if they've just hit the wall. Saint Francis has lost four of their last five games and is searching for its early-season magic. Landon Kim and Nick Chow are still formidable, while the top-of-the-order foursome of Landon King, Jack Leeper, Tanner Wall and Gino Cappellazzo have been solid. | <
6. | Bellarmine (15-12) | Nate Sutton's young Bells just had the week of their baseball lives. Now they want to do it again -- this time on the bigger CCS stage. Three road wins in consecutive days against Saint Francis, Serra and Valley Christian turned us into believers that anything is possible. With the right draw, Bellarmine can have another big week. Their future is bright. |
7. | Capuchino (17-10) | Matt Wilson's Mustangs righted the ship after a midseason slump and find themselves with a core group of seniors -- pitcher Declan Mendel, catcher Lucas Zayac, and infielders Andres Gomez, Anakin Manuel and Travis Ciardella -- that is poised for a CCS title repeat. They are talented and fundamentally sound. |
8. | Menlo School (18-8) | The Knghts took a while to gel, losing seven of their first 10 games, albeit against some pretty good competition -- Serra, Los Gatos and Menlo-Atherton to start the season -- but they have been hard to beat in the Ocean Division. A 13-1 league record speaks volumes about their dominance. Jack Freehill stands out on a team that has meshed well. |
9. | Terra Nova (18-6-1) | The Tigers are probably a year early to being really good. No one counted on sophomores Brody Finale, Wes McDougal and pitcher Jesse Martinez (8-2) being this good so soon. Add them to a junior class that includes catcher Joey Donati and the future is bright. Imagine how good they'll be when they get to play a home game at least once a week. |
10. | Sequoia (15-12) | The Ravens are playing their best baseball right now. A loss to Carlmont snapped a winning streak, but they bounced back on Frday with a big performance from junior Morgan Winfield, who hit two home runs and tossed a two-hit shutout. Winfield and senior catcher Logan Mathias have been as advertised and the supporting cast -- led by Drew Ostrander -- has contributed. |
Creepers: Mitty (13-15). Hillsdale (12-13), The King's Academy (13-11), Carlmont (13-14), Sacred Heart Cathedral (12-16), Mitty (11-13).
