The early diagnosis on Morgan Winfield's right elbow is positive.
There appears to be no ligament damage after the Sequoia High senior left Thursday's game in pain after throwing a pitch in the second innings.
"Morgan is going to be OK," Sequoia coach Mike Doyle said on Friday. "No throwing for a couple of weeks, but no ligament damage."
Doyle said Thursday night that he didn't think Winfield would pitch again this season but never ruled out his availability to swing the bat. Winfield, who has three home runs this year, is considered one of the top power hitters on the Peninsula.
"Don't count me out yet," Winfield said Friday morning. "I can still hit and play first base."
When he returns to the lineup is still up for discussion, Winfield admitted.
"I don't know when I'll be back," he said. "I will discuss it with Coach Doyle today."
Winfield, the No. 8 player in PeninsulaPrepBaseball's Preseason Prime 31, was injured while throwing a second-inning pitch in the Ravens 14-9 victory over The King's Academy. He quickly threw his glove to the ground and grabbed his right arm in obvious pain.
"I just went too hard a little too soon on the mound," said the Saint Mary's College signee.
Winfield came into his senior season on the mend after suffering a knee injury last summer that required surgery. His goals this year were twofold: Help the Ravens win the PAL-Bay Division and make a deep run in the CCS tournament while staying healthy.
"My knee hurt a lot more," Winfield said. "I was scared, but the pain dialed back and it felt better this morning. I just have to keep it easy."
